Recent events have exposed some of society's darker aspects, illustrating how quickly energy can shift and movements can gain momentum.
We have also seen the love and hope of a public not willing to accept hate. We have seen the sector and organisation's we fund spring into action while at the same time facing the reality that many within these organisations are also living the experience personally. Emotional labour is being expended, the fear is very real, all the while responding in a crisis.
Many funders have provided emergency funding. And there is a recognition that longer term support is desperately needed alongside that.
Philanthropy has a unique role to play in shifting, redesigning and challenging some of these intrenched structures. The very same structures that allowed this racist violence to erupt.
But it can be hard to know where to start, the problem is so big. The reality of shifting and changing these dynamics in our own organisations can be so overwhelming that it can become easy to hide behind them.
But what if we applied that same urgency to the structural changes as we do to the crisis responses?
As a starting point, we're inviting you to join a dynamic, 10 day sprint focused on how we can disrupt our own ways of working, continue to deepen our practice of acting responsively and face into some of the bigger structural challenges. Our goal is to create a better funding and resource system to support racial justice initiatives thrive. Doing this by prioritising and identifying the practical, first steps in acting towards these bigger changes.
