Spiral investing offers a path to a post-endowment future, beyond institutionalised philanthropy; to a world where grants and investments are one and the same; to a place where all our resources - financial capital, as well as our collective knowledge, care, love and energy - are invested with the purpose of creating spirals of social and ecological wealth.

Spiral investing has three explicit core principles:

• It sets our financial return expectations at zero. We’re aiming at more holistic ‘returns’ on our investments – joy, knowledge, wellbeing, community wealth, land abundant in ecology and prosperous communities.
• It foregrounds a devolution of power. Investments may help generate a flow of financial revenue. Decisions over how those revenues are distributed and reinvested will rest within communities, movements, and collectives —not with us.
• It revolves around seeding and revitalising the Commons: collective or common ownership – or indeed no ownership at all – of everything from land to ideas; from water to housing.

We want to invest in those communities of people, organisations, movements and ideas committed to a new paradigm that places socio-ecological wellbeing and justice at its heart - and we want to support the messy, emergent connections between them so they can work together in new, collaborative, and holistic ways. We recognise that such a coalescing will likely require spacious time as well as financial resource.
